Food has always been a love language. Across cultures, cooking, sharing, and offering special dishes is a way of saying “I care about you” without needing words. On Valentine’s Day, these traditional foods remind us that love isn’t just felt—it’s made, served, and shared.

Here are some classic examples where food is a love language all by itself:

  • Italy: Homemade pasta or lasagna, often made for Sunday family gatherings
  • Japan: Bento boxes, carefully arranged for a loved one
  • Mexico: Tamales, made together and shared during holidays
  • India: Kheer or halwa, sweet dishes offered to show care and celebration
  • China: Dumplings, especially handmade for family and festivals
  • Korea: Kimchi, prepared in large batches to nourish loved ones year-round
  • Middle East: Baklava or stuffed grape leaves, made patiently for guests
  • Jewish tradition: Challah, baked for Shabbat as an act of care and continuity
  • Philippines: Adobo, often cooked differently for each family member’s taste
  • West Africa: Jollof rice, served at gatherings to bring people together

Mini Heart Pizzas

Ingredients

  • 4 slices Italian bread
  • 1/2 cup tomato sauce
  • 1 cup mozzarella cheese, shredded
  • 4 button mushrooms, cleaned and sliced
  • 1/4 cup cherry tomatoes, halved
  • 2 handfuls spinach
  • 2 Tablespoons sliced black olives
  • 1 handful fresh basil, thinly sliced chiffonade

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.
  2. Use a heart-shaped cookie cutter to cut Italian bread into heart shapes. Arrange evenly on a baking sheet.
  3. Generously top each bread heart with tomato sauce, mozzarella cheese, mushrooms, cherry tomatoes, spinach, and black olives.
  4. Bake for 5-10 minutes, until cheese is melted and edges of bread are golden.
  5. Top hot pizzas with fresh basil and serve.
