Nutrition for Exercise

It is common to consider changing your nutrition or taking a supplement if you are working out or an athlete. Most supplement aisles are overwhelming. What’s on the shelf isn’t backed by much research, but a few things may be helpful.

Creatine may support strength and recovery with resistance training.

Caffeine before a workout can give endurance a small boost. Make sure to consider the timing of the caffeine intake as you do not want it to disrupt your sleep.

Protein powder isn’t essential, but it’s an easy way to hit your protein targets through food alone.

Supplements aren’t regulated like medications, so quality varies a lot by brand. If you want a safety net, look for NSF Certified for Sport or Informed Sport on the label.

At the end of the day, food does most of the heavy lifting; enough protein, carbs, and water matter more than anything in a bottle. If you’re thinking about adding a supplement, it’s always good to talk to your medical team, especially if you’re on any medications.
