Air Fryers: What’s the Hype? I Air-Fried Onion Rings with Horseradish Sauce

It feels as though everyone is a marketing agent for air fryers these days. But is it worth the investment? Let’s take a look at some of the benefits that air fryers can bring to the kitchen.

1. Convenience.
An air fryer is similar to an oven. It uses a strong fan to blow heat onto the food. The difference is that an air fryer heats up fast and cooks food quickly. Ideal for last-minute dinner sides or reheating leftovers after a busy day.

2. Taste.
The air fryer cooks food evenly and can add texture to your home-cooked meal. It allows for a crispy bite of various foods, such as tofu, Brussel sprouts, chicken, and more.

3. Heart healthy.
Air fryers require less oil than the traditional deep-fryer at your local restaurant. You also have control over the type of oil that you use. Choosing heart-healthy oils, such as olive, avocado, or canola oil can improve cholesterol levels and provide us with the fat our bodies need.

Air-Fried Onion Rings with Horseradish Sauce

Servings: 4

Ingredients

2 large red onions
2 cups all-purpose flour
6 eggs
2 1/2 cups panko breadcrumbs
1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1 teaspoon paprika
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon pepper
1 cup olive oil mayonnaise
1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
2 green onions, finely chopped
3 teaspoons prepared horseradish (more or less to taste)
1 teaspoon lemon juice

Preparation

1. Peel and cut the onion horizontally into 3/4 inch slices. Separate the slices into rings.
2. Get three bowls: one for the flour, one for the beaten eggs, and one for the panko.
3. Add the cayenne, paprika, and pepper to the flour.
4. To coat the onion rings, follow this order for each ring: dip in egg, followed by flour, egg, flour, egg, panko. Place each ring on a metal baking sheet. Once all rings are coated, place in the freezer for at least 30 minutes.
5. While the onion rings are freezing, make your sauce: combine the mayonnaise, Dijon mustard, horseradish, lemon juice, and 1 teaspoon of salt. Mix well.
6. Preheat your air fryer to 375º F.
7. Remove onion rings from the freezer.
8. Place the onion rings in a single layer in your air fryer.
9. Spray lightly with cooking spray.
10. Fry for about 10-12 minutes or until onion rings are golden brown and crispy.
