Food is one of the biggest expenses in most households. There are smart ways to cut costs without sacrificing nutrition or flavor. Whether you’re feeding a family or just yourself, here are some effective strategies to save money on food.
1. Plan Your Meals.
Creating a meal plan helps you avoid impulse buys and reduces food waste. When you know what you’re cooking, you buy only what you need. Use what you already have in your pantry before heading to the store. Talk to your dietitian about different ways to plan out meals.
2. Make a Grocery List (and Stick to It).
Lists are your best friend when it comes to saving money. They keep you focused and help you avoid extras. Also, try not to shop when you’re hungry—you’re more likely to overspend.
3. Buy in Bulk.
Items like rice, pasta, canned goods, and frozen vegetables often cost less when purchased in larger quantities.
4. Use Leftovers Creatively.
Don’t toss leftovers—turn them into new meals. Roast chicken can become chicken salad, soup, or tacos. Stretch your ingredients further by repurposing what you already made.
5. Shop Seasonal and Local.
Fruits and vegetables that are in season are usually cheaper and fresher. Farmers’ markets can offer great deals, especially near closing time when sellers want to clear out stock.
6. Use Coupons and Apps.
Many grocery stores offer digital coupons or loyalty programs. Cashback and discount apps like Ibotta or Checkout 51 can also save you money with little effort.
