It can be challenging to stay active over the winter. Whether you are interested in outdoor or indoor activities, here are some ideas to keep you moving through the winter months.
Outdoor:
- Skiing or snowboarding.
- Sledding.
- Snowshoeing.
- Hiking.
- Treasure hunting with Geocaching or Pokemon Go apps.
Indoors:
- Strength training, aerobic or yoga classes at a local gym or streaming. Check out Fitness Blender or YouTube for free classes. Or ask your Dietitian for other streaming options.
- Running alternatives including climbing stairs, jumping jacks, mountain climbers, burpees, jumping rope, or high knees. Alternate between exercises.
- Swimming or water aerobics at a local pool.
- Use Nintendo Switch or Wii to play different activities or games.
Fun with kids:
- Have a family dance off. Take turns with your favorite music.
- Play games: twister, Simon says, floor is lava, charades, indoor snowball fight, or build an obstacle course.
- Build a snowman.
- Indoor “skating” using socks on hard wood floors.
- Stream activity videos including Zumba Dance, Kids Bop Dance, Go Noodle or Cosmic Kids yoga.

Three Sisters Soup in Crockpot
Ingredients
1 Tablespoon butter
1 medium onion, chopped
1 large garlic clove, minced
6 cups chicken or vegetable broth
1 large celery stalk, diced
1 large carrot, peeled and chopped
1 cup butternut squash or pumpkin, peeled and chopped
1 cup tomatoes, seeded and chopped
1 large potato, peeled and chopped
16 ounce can pinto beans
1 cup frozen corn kernels
1 Tablespoon tomato paste
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/8 to 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1/8 teaspoon dried red pepper flakes, or to taste
1/2 cup cilantro snipped for garnish/topping (optional)
Directions
1.In 4 quart (or larger) crock pot, add butter, onion, garlic, broth, and celery. Cover and cook on low for 2 hours.
2.Add carrots, squash, tomato, and potato. Cover and cook for for 1 1/2 hours.
3.Add undrained beans, corn, tomato paste, oregano, salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes. Turn cooker to high and cook for another 30 minutes or until vegetables are tender.
4.Serve with optional cilantro garnish/topping.
