Winter in New England means access to some incredible citrus. You are probably familiar clementines, tangerines, and navel oranges. But have you heard of the pomelo?

The pomelo is a humble, Asian citrus fruit. On the outside, it resembles a grapefruit. In fact, the grapefruit is actually a cross between a pomelo and a sweet orange. Here’s everything you need to know about the pomelo.

-Pomelos are sweeter and have less juice. Grapefruit is known for it’s tang. But Pomelos are pleasantly sweet.
-Pomelo flowers can be used for perfume. They have an extremely aromatic scent.
-They are a powerful source of Vitamin C. One pomelo can provide the necessary daily needs for Vitamin C.
-Pomelos provide a source of the antioxidants naringenin and naringin. These can help reduce inflammation in the body.

Asian Shrimp Salad with Pomelo

Ingredients
1/2 pound of cooked cocktail shrimp
1 small cucumber, seeded and cut into short strips
1 stalk celery, finely chopped
1 whole pomelo, skin removed and flesh segmented
3 cups fresh Arugula greens
4 scallions, finely chopped

For the dressing:
1/2 cup canola oil
1 Tablespoon garlic, minced
1 teaspoon fresh ginger, minced
2 Tablespoons lemon juice
1 teaspoon sesame oil
2 Tablespoons chili sauce

Optional toppings: diced avocado, shredded cheese, bacon bits, sour cream, corn chips, lime.

Preparation

1.In a large bowl, combine the shrimp, cucumber, celery, pomelo, arugula, and scallions.
2.In a separate bowl, whisk together the ingredients for the dressing until well combined. Pour the dressing over the shrimp and vegetable mixture. Toss to coat. Serve immediately.

Serving Size: 4 servings
